How To Make Dal Fry

Dal Fry is not just a simple dish made in our homes. Dal Fry is suitable for Diabetics, Weight loss, Heart patients, and for a healthy lifestyle. Dal fry is an all-time favorite dish found in all kinds of diners, both simple and expensive. Made by just a handful of simple and everyday kitchen ingredients, it is tasty, aromatic, and healthy and eaten with almost all our Indian main dishes like rice, parathas, rotis, pooris, etc. What makes a Dal fry so unique? Its taste and easy preparation. Let’s see how to create this masterpiece.


1Toor dal/ Arhar dal/ Yellow Moong dal + Masoor dal¾+¼
2Water2-2.5 Cups
3SaltAs required
4Ghee/ Oil/ Butter1 ½ Tablespoon
5Cumin/ Jeera½ to ¾ Tablespoons
6Mustard (optional)½ Tablespoons
7Asafoetida2 Pinches
8Red chili (optional)1 No
9Green Chilli1 or 2 Nos
11Ginger Garlic Paste1 Tablespoons
13Turmeric¼ Tablespoons
14Garam Masala¼ Tablespoons
15Red Chilli Powder¼ to ½ Tablespoons
16Kasuri Methi½ Tablespoons
17Coriander LeavesHandful
18Lemon juice (optional) As required

Cooking Method:

Wash the dal ingredients properly and add it to a pressure cooker with water. Cook on medium flame until two whistles. After this, the dal becomes soft and mushy.

Next, take a pan and add ghee, oil, or butter. Add mustard, cumin, and red chili (optional).

After they splutter, add onions and green chilies. Saute until golden.

Add ginger-garlic paste and saute until the raw smell disappears.

Add Tomatoes and salt saute till they turn soft.

Add the masalas chili powder, garam masala, and turmeric.

Saute till the masala aroma leaves the pan.

Finally, add the cooked Dal and add water accordingly to bring to consistency.

Stir well for about 3 to 5 minutes till the dal bubbles well.

When the desired consistency arrives, add Kasuri methi and salt if required.

Stir and cook for a minute.

Turn off the stove and garnish with chopped coriander and lemon juice if required.

Serve with a lemon wedge or ghee if required.


Serve Dal fry with Basmati rice, hot biryani rice, jeera rice or pulao. It is also used for rotis or naan, parathas, etc. Dal fry is a tasty and healthier alternative to many side dishes. Impress your dear one with this easy yet effective heavenly dish. Get cooking!
